The
trigunas
Ayurveda
has its roots in ancient spiritual texts of India’s
“Vedas”. It is not only a science on the
physical level, but goes beyond the body to the spiritual
level. Ayurveda is a spiritual science to assist one’s
journey of life.
Ayurvedic
spiritual thinking is based upon the fact that we are
all growing or traveling to our reunification with god.
The concept of three gunas is the base from which we
try to understand ourselves emotionally and spiritually.
Guna is defined as the quality of nature.
Sattva:-
Is the quality of purity and integrity. When our mind
is in a satvic state, we reflect the purity of god in
our beings; we become the seat of the virtues of godhood.
Our mind becomes still and quiet reflecting peace and
happiness.
Rajas:-
Is a state of hyperactivity arising out of desires and
ambitions. These desires distract us from our true goal
in life and lead us to feelings of fear, worry, anxiety,
anger resentment and attachment. As a result binding
us to the physical life and the drama involved in it.
The mind with rajasic tendencies is like the sea disturbed
by hurricane winds.
Tamas:-
Is the state of darkness, and lack of motion (inertia).
In tamsic state we completely become unaware of our
connection with god, but we fall into animalistic darkness
and become harmful to ourselves and to those who come
in contact with us. With our animal (dark) nature predominant,
we take actions leading to violence, addiction to drugs
etc. Tamas is darkness.
